The Institute of Neuroimmunology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (NIU SAS) is a research centre for neuroscience in Slovakia. We focus on the CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM and its interactions with the IMMUNE SYSTEM. The RESEARCH includes the molecular biology and proteomics of neurons and astroglia, signal transmission and synapse biology, brain-related activities of peripheral immune cells and cytokine signalling, metabolomics of neurotransmitters and other small active molecules in the brain parenchyma, cerebrospinal fluid and blood, and the biological basis of normal and pathological behavior and cognition.

“We strive to deliver the results of the research from the bench to the patients and translate the scientific knowledge into the improvements of everyday life.”

We support researchers escaping military conflicts in their home countries. We currently host two graduate students from Afganistan and two researchers from Ukraine.
