The Institute of Neuroimmunology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences was established on January 1, 1996, as a specialized RESEARCH CENTER for neurosciences. During the first decade of its existence, the Institute has become the LEADING INSTITUTION IN NEURORESEARCH IN SLOVAKIA.

Milestones

2015

The Institute of Neuroimmunology participates in the project JPsustaiND: Coordination Action in support of the sustainability and globalization of the Joint Programming Initiative on Neurodegenerative Diseases, new concerted support action of JPND and Horizon2020.

The Institute of Neuroimmunology participates in the project REfrAME: Pathway complexities of protein misfolding in neurodegenerative diseases: a novel approach to risk evaluation and model development, joint transnational co-funded call in partnership with the European Commission under the ERA-NET and JPND.

The Institute of Neuroimmunology receives the grant NGP-NET: Non-globular proteins – from sequence to structure, function and application in molecular pathophysiology,  COST action financed by the European Commission.

2012

Director of the Institute of Neuroimmunology, Prof. Michal Novak, is the co-author of the Strategic Research Agenda of largest global initiative in neurodegeneration research in EU,  “Joint programming – Neurodegenerative disease research” (JPND).

February 7 –  Prof. Michal Novak becomes a member of the presentation board during its launch at the EU Commission in Brussels.

The Centre of Excellence for Brain Research becomes a member of The Centres of Excellence in Neurodegeneration Research (CoEN) – a parallel research initiative operating under the umbrella of JPND

2011

The Institute of Neuroimmunology initiates the establishment of the Centre of Excellence for Brain Research (Brain Centre),  approved by the Presidium of SAS.

The Institute of Neuroimmunology takes part in the project BIOMARKAPD – Biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease (2011-2016), funded by JPND.

2008

The Institute of Neuroimmunology participates in the project ALCOVE – Alzheimer’s COoperative Valuation in Europe (2008-2013), a joint action co-financed by the European Commission (in the framework of the Public Health Programme) and by the Executive Agency for Health and Consumers (EAHC) within the framework of the Community’s 2008-2013 public health programs.

2006

The Institute of Neuroimmunology proposes the first Ph.D. program in Neuroscience to the Accreditation Committee of the Government of Slovak Republic. The Committee and the Ministry approve the proposal and the Institute of Neuroimmunology becomes the first official educational centre for Ph.D. in Neuroscience.

2005

The Institute becomes a founding member and coordinator of the Centre of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders (AD Centre). The Institute becomes a co-founder of the Slovak Society for Neuroscience, which is a member of FENS – The Federation of European Neuroscience Societies. It unites neuroscientists throughout Slovakia in their effort to analyze the molecular underpinnings of the normal, neurodegenerative and neuroregenerative processes.

2004

December 16 – Presidium of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in its 58th session on 16th December 2004 (resolution No. 1155) approves the setting up of the Centre of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders.

2003

July 31 – After receiving full accreditation from European Union and from Slovak National Accreditation Service (SNAS) for screening of prion diseases, the Institute of Neuroimmunology is appointed by the Government of the Slovak Republic as the National Reference Laboratory for the Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (resolution of the Government of SR, 31.7.2003, No. 323/2003).

The Institute of Neuroimmunology, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, opens the first specialized psychiatric ambulance care for Alzheimer’s disease in the Centre MEMORY, as the national province centre in SR.

2002

May 25 – The Institute of Neuroimmunology, together with Foundation MEMORY, opens a joint platform for the scientific outputs into the medical practice – a daily care Centre MEMORY .

1997

October 21 – The Government of the Slovak Republic appoints the Institute of Neuroimmunology to the National Scientific Centre representing the Slovak Republic in the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB).

August 11 – On the basis of the decision of the Presidium of SAS from August 11, 1997 (resolution No. 735) and of the Ministry of Agriculture, a joint initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture and SAS named the “Central laboratory of veterinary biomedicine (CLVB)” was established on the platform of NIU.

1996

January 1 – Foundation of the Institute of Neuroimmunology.

February 15 – The President of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Prof. Ing. Š. Luby, DrSc, Dr.h.c., and the chancellor of the University of Veterinary Medicine in Košice, Prof. MVDr. Rudolf Cabadaj, PhD, Dr.h.c., sign the contract on the founding of the joint laboratory – Center of Biomedical Microbiology and Immunology (CBMI).
