Institute of Neuroimmunology is research centre for neuroscience, the science of the nervous system, which stretches from the molecular biology of nerve cells to biological basis of normal and disordered behaviour and cognition. The Institute studies neuroscience at various levels, from a) molecular level, to b) cellular level, to c) systems level up to d) cognitive level and uses its observations and findings for searching underlying causes of the neurodegeneration and neurodegenerative diseases with focus on Alzheimer’s disease and related neurodegenerative disorders (tauopathies) and prion diseases. The Institute at the molecular level (molecular neuroscience) addresses in neurodegeneration altered neuronal molecular signals and the response of the immune system to these signals and stimuli (molecular neuroimmunology). At the cellular level (cellular neuroscience) Institute investigates mechanisms of neuronal degeneration and participation of the immune signalling pathways on this deleterious process. At the system level (systems neuroscience) Institute studies impact of neurodegeneration on physiological functions, such as sensorimotor integration, coordination and balance, neuromuscular functions, and alterations in learning and memory. At the cognitive level (cognitive neuroscience) the Institute addresses the impact of neurodegeneration on cognitive functions. To achieve these goals the Institute uses latest neurogenomic, neurotranscriptomic, neuroproteomic and neurometabolomic techniques. The Institute is home to doctoral studies from a) neuroscience, b) immunology and c) molecular biology. Institute has developed collaborative partnerships and networking in the Slovak Republic and international scientific community to conduct research on human and animal neurodegenerative disorders.
